“Money was never a big motivation for me, except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is playing the game.”
“It seems to be a strange inevitability that, as governments become larger and more powerful, their ‘personality’ becomes more stoic and serious. That’s why I think this is the perfect opportunity to use the huge scale and reach of our paper money system ($629 million a day printed in 2008) to inject a sense of humor and frivolity into our relentless earnest government – in this case, in the form of a game. My design plays on the many conspiracy theories long associated with American money by intentionally hiding actual clues to an elaborate mystery in each bill. In fact, there is no reason why every part of our government can’t get in on (and benefit from) the fun and absurdity. Public television can run fake news reports, physical clues could be hidden in national parks, mysterious reports can surface deep within public government databases, etc. Anyone can play and skills of every kind would be required.”
