Kyle R Thompson : Inspiring : Hopeful : Positive : Dollar ReDe$ign

“I sought inspiration in numerous areas of American culture and history, and eventually decided to focus on the philosophers and political thinkers (i.e. Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, among others) who inspired the Founding Fathers. I chose this for several reasons, the most important being that I feel that a new system of US currency should be hopeful and positive, while simultaneously reminding citizens and the world at large of the ideals on which the United States was originally founded. The bills vary in size and have alternating notches for the visually impaired. The lower right corner of the bill’s shape is a curvature based on the golden mean, which is meant to give the bill a powerfully distinctive appearance as compared to other currencies, as well as echoing an age of idealism and humanistic thought.”

  1. Nice work. The length of the bills I believe devalues the currency, but over all I think they looks great and it was a clever idea to go with philosophy and critical thinkers instead of ex prez.

  2. I think the look is fantastic, but while I appreciate the idea of celebrating the philosophical origins of the nation, I still think the fundamental concept that currency portraits should be of people of the national origin of the nation in question is a pretty solid one. (Not to mention that a certain kind of ‘murican would flip out to see a bunch of French names on their money.) I also think the history of American political thought is not as simple as direct transmission of European ideas, but rather it’s a process of creolization, as older concepts were reworked into American institutions that reflected different peoples, different economic realities, hence the reason that it’s right to see Jefferson (with all his twisted views of freedom and slavery) as more fitting for US currency than, say, Locke. I’d personally prefer more faces of people other than the founders on our dollar bills, including artists.

  3. In response to Charlie’s comment, I agree that having some other people beyond founders would be a great idea. I’d go for some musicians (Duke Ellington, George Gershwin…) scientists (Richard Feynman, Linus Pauling, Gibbs), and others of note.

  4. El dise??o es demasiado parecido al del Euro, no creo que sirviera. En el euro arcos y puentes. En este dolar personajes y capiteles.

  5. I’ll have to agree with some of the other people. The bills look really nice, but they should probably feature Americans…the fact that they don’t is not a detail that would go unnoticed by the rest of the world. On the contrary, I’m afraid it would seem rather comical and even foolish.

  6. I admire this elegant idea and graphic design. I’d love to see also Copernico and Darwin, giants of cultural conquest for all mankind. After all the Dollar ReDes$ign Project is a Revolution, and some revolutionary and visionary scientists could be pertinent with the spirit of the challange. I feel a personal need to celebrate science close to humanistic thought. Both areas of knowlegde helped us to be true and conscious of our position in universe, adding dignity to all of us.Great great work Kyle. Congratulations!
