“I wanted to design the paper currency to be accessible, secure, culturally up-to-date, and fresh, while still showcasing some of our country’s prouder moments in history. I wanted to create a timeless design that could still be fresh throughout the entire 21st century, and beyond.
Before I designed all six of the banknotes, I already knew the basic elements I wanted featured on each bill. I felt that the portrait was important to keep as the focal point of the notes. Additionally, I thought it was best to feature people who’ve lived on our soil for nearly all of recorded history—from different walks of life, occupations, racial/ethnic backgrounds, sexes, time periods, and levels of influence—instead of just 18th/19th century Presidents and Washington elite.
The notes are different sizes, varying in .25″ segments, from 4.5″ to 5.75″. I selected Gotham – a clear, legible, elegant typeface – for the type on the notes.”
